Inulin and FOS fructo-oligosaccharides are soluble prebiotic fibers that promote the growth of friendly bacteria to produce important metabolites, including lactic acid and the short-chain fatty acids acetate, propionate and butyrate.

Lactic acid helps maintain the correct pH in the intestines. In addition, acetate, propionate and butyrate support the integrity of the intestinal cells lining the colon.
