When you go outside on a sunny day, your exposed skin makes vitamin D3. Technically, this process occurs when ultraviolet B ( UVB) radiation from the sun triggers 7-dehydrocholesterol to produce D3. Plants, as well as fungi, also go through a similar process of making the vitamin D2.
What does vitamin D do in your body?
Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for the body and helps it in various tasks:
Immune system: vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Bone and muscle health: vitamin D is very important for the structural system body and maintenance of normal bone and muscle function. It also contributes to the normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus.
Do you have enough vitamin D?
There are several factors that will affect your body’s ability to synthesize vitamin D, including exposure to less exposure to sunlight, such as during the winter months (October-March) or wearing clothing that covers more of the skin in the summer months, with darker skin and older than 65.
Natural vitamin D is not found in many foods, so some foods are fortified with it. Good food sources of vitamin D include: sardines, egg yolk, salmon, shrimp, fortified milks, fortified yogurts, fortified cereals, and fortified orange juice.
